Utility averages: EIA Form 861, 2024, full-service (default) customers. Every metro area in the lower 48 states was compared using its main utility’s average, and these are the 50 highest; Alaska and Hawaii appear in the state table. Where a city-owned or irrigation-district utility is the main provider, its own average is shown. These are averages, not a quote for any building or account.

Other Large Metro Areas

Large metro areas whose average falls below the 50 costliest. Same method: the 2024 utility average for the main utility, compared with that state’s own 2024 average. Ranked by average price, highest first.

How to Read These Rates

What the Average Price Is

Average price = all commercial revenue ÷ all commercial kWh. It averages every charge (energy, demand, customer charges, surcharges) over kWh, so it is not a tariff.

Your Own Rate

These figures are averages across many customers. Your own per-kWh rate may be lower or higher. For the most accurate estimate in the Savings Calculator, use the rate on your own bill.

How Often We Update

We refresh these rates a few times a year as new public data is published. The date above the state table shows the latest update.

See What Your Rate Means for Your Building

Use your rate in the Savings Calculator to estimate the plug and process load energy your building uses when no one is there.
