The Challenge
Faced with an inefficient energy infrastructure, Waterbury Public Schools wanted to put critically needed energy savings measures in place as quickly as possible, favoring measures with quick paybacks and rapid deployment.
The Solution
The district selected NORESCO for a performance contract that included plug load control, new boilers and chillers, energy management system upgrades, and lighting retrofits and replacements. BERT plug load management was one of the first measures completed.
BERT's toolkit carried the project from audit to installation. During the investment-grade audit, the audit tool verified wireless coverage and recorded the plug load devices in each room, producing a savings sheet for each building. Installers knew each controller's location before they arrived, and the installation tool recorded the building, room, controller and device type. The BERT support team verified each new controller remotely as it came online.
The Results
BERT's plug load measure delivers 201,247 kWh and $27,543 in annual energy savings, with $60,372 in estimated incentives. Its 4.2-year simple payback, net of incentives, was the fastest of the project's 14 measures and more than three times faster than the 14.1-year project average.
