Please Don't Unplug Me

This is a BERT controller. BERT switches devices off when nobody needs them, and power is back on before the scheduled start of the day.

Need It On Right Now?

Every BERT controller has an override button. Anyone at the device can use it.

  1. Find the button. On the BERT Smart Plug 110 AP, the BERT logo is the button. On a wall-mounted inline controller, it's the button in the center of the plate. On the BERT Wall Outlet 110 WO, the top and bottom outlets each have their own button.
  2. Press and hold it for a few seconds, until the light changes and you hear a click. That turns the equipment on, or off if it's already on.
  3. Then the schedule takes over. Depending on how your facility set it up, the device stays that way until the next scheduled event, or for a set time (such as 1, 2 or 3 hours).

Need a different schedule, such as later evenings, a holiday or a special event? Ask your facility manager.

What This Device Does

  • It turns the equipment connected to it off when the building is empty, at night, on weekends and on holidays, and back on before the scheduled start of the day.
  • It measures the energy that equipment uses, so your facility team can see what's being saved.
  • BERT never controls equipment that must stay on.
  • Please leave it plugged in. If the equipment is unplugged from the BERT controller, BERT can't turn it off at night or measure what it uses.

What the Light and Click Mean

The Light

Light on: the controller has the equipment on.

Light off: the equipment is off.

The Click

You'll hear a click whenever a BERT controller turns the equipment on or off. It's another way to tell it's working.

Something Not Working?

Tell your facility team first. They manage the schedules for your building. If the equipment won't come on, check that it and the BERT controller are plugged in, and try the override button.

Quick Questions

Can I use the equipment after hours?

Yes. Press and hold the override button for a few seconds, until the light comes on and you hear a click. Depending on how your facility set it up, it stays on until the next scheduled event or for a set time, and then the normal schedule takes over again.

What happens if the Wi-Fi or internet goes down?

The equipment keeps following its schedule, because schedules and essential settings are stored in each BERT controller. The override button still works.

Does BERT turn off anything important?

BERT never controls life-safety, emergency, security, medical-support, server or network equipment, or anything that must stay on.

What does BERT record?

This controller only measures the electricity the equipment uses and when it's switched on or off. It can't see what's on the screen or what anyone is doing. BERT keeps equipment, schedule and energy data only, never student or personnel data. Only your organization and BERT have access, and no one else gets access without your organization's authorization.

Can the schedule be changed?

Yes. Ask your facility manager. Authorized BERTBrain users can set daily, weekly, holiday and special-event schedules for any device or group, or they can ask BERT Support to make the change.
